As multiplication is simply a method for repeated addition, and division a method for repeated subtraction it is vital children understand those concepts before being asked to rote-learn their tables. We use a number of strategies to help children master their tables, but it is through repeated practise that they will achieve best results. This is not done through websites or worksheets, rather short, daily practise sessions with a coach. A coach could be a parent, sibling or friend. It is best to keep these sessions short, no more than ten minutes at a time. It is amazing how much more a student can achieve in a ten minute dialogue compared to ten minutes spent filling in a worksheet. It also gives them an opportunity to receive immediate feedback, and the coach will quickly learn what areas the student requires greater practice in.</div></div>]]></content:encoded></item><item><title>The Importance of Handwriting</title><description><![CDATA[As a teacher I have heard many arguments for not explicitly teaching handwriting in the classroom: "The kids will be using computers for everything soon..."
